AFI Tribute to Sean Connery Taped June 8, Shown June 21.

The American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award presentation to Sean Connery was shown on the USA Network last night.
It was a terrific event filled with lots of laughter and heartfelt appreciation of the work of Sean Connery. Among those who spoke were Mike Myers, Harrison Ford, Michael Caine, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Andy Garcia, Craig Ferguson….the list goes on and on. Of course, at the head of our list was Tom Jones (who sang, of course).
On the red carpet, Tom said of Connery, “”That’s why women love him, he’s a very natural man and I think that’s what comes across in everything he does.”
In these three photos, Tom is shown as Connery enters the room, Connery is reacting to Tom’s song and Mike Myers is, too. We’ve taken a dozen screen shots, like the thumbnails here, and posted them in our Screen Shots set.

It was terrific to see Tom on the special, even though he was the only celebrity who did not speak. In any case, it would have been even better if he had warmed up a bit before he sang. He missed a few notes, probably not noticed by most, but certainly noted by those of us who hear him often.

I noticed the vocal irregularities as well. He is normally so vocally perfect, that when he is not flawless, it is definitely noticed. I told a friend of mine that I thought he was a bit nervous, but she thought I was goofy.
The thing that got on my last nerve is that Tom has been trying to get away from that “cheesy” image that has haunted him..and what do they do..put tacky go go dancers in the act. Despite all of that, it was great to see him on television and he did look gorgeous.

I agree…Sir Tom was hot but the song was way too short. Wish he had more camara time.

Tom did a great job singing Thunderball but they seemed to cut the music short at the end and the song (music) seemed to be rushed. I think the cheesy go-go dancers were there to reflect the 007 movie theme during that era. Did you notice that Tom got the best response from Sean Connery? (Sir Sean didn’t even seem to recognize some of the presenters.) I loved Tom’s suit and the fact that he was wearing his “knight” pin.
Oh and I double checked my dictionary and next to the word, “Gorgeous” Sure enough, is a picture of Tom Jones!

I noticed a pitchy problem or two….certainly not typical of Tom, so I thought possibly it was the acoustics in the building. Worst problem was the song was all too short; the evening deserved more of Sir Tom!! I especially loved seeing Sir Sean smiling so big during Tom’s song, and Mike Myers appearing as though he had been cheering at many a Tom concert.
