Vote Tallied for the Seven Wonders of Wales
Saturday, June 24th, 2006Well, Sir Tom placed at #22 with 1.88% of the vote. Still very respectable when one considers that every other contender was a building or a natural wonder or a landmark.
If you want to read the full story, you can go to ic wales.
The winner? The “Great Glasshouse” in the Botanic Garden of Wales, designed by Sir Norman Foster and opened six years ago in Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire. If you wish to visit, this is an especially good weekend to do so, as it is when the Garden of Wales Festival takes place.
At the risk of offending any Taffys in the crowd, while the Great Glasshouse is beautiful, we’ve got to say that our favorite Welsh Wonder is still Tom Jones.

“As would be expected, lists like this always provoke strong feelings, particularly in terms of items that may not have made it into the final seven.
“In a land still known as a land of rugby and song it may seem odd to international observers that neither the Millennium Stadium nor Tom Jones have found a place.”
I am assuming then that most Welshmen do not consider a human icon eligible to be part of the 7 Wonders. So did our votes count????

Greetings from Dusseldorf!
The international fans of Tom should not feel so bad that our über entertainer has honourably lost out to such a stunning work of architectural splendour. The beautiful Great Glasshouse of Wales is surely a modern wonder of Wales and a magnificent erection for us all to behold!

Note: We’re not sure, Marian and Rudi, whether or not Tom — or any person — belonged on that list. It is probably truly debatable. Wales looks a beautiful country and, Rudi, you are fortunate that you have had the good luck to visit there.

Rudi, I didn’t mean to imply that Tom “should” have won in such a survey, but I do think it is remarkable that some must have voted for him in such a list. The previous survey/poll last year was actually for a list of people in history, past or present….and some didn’t approve of Tom being on that list. However, some of us here in America, actually link Wales with Tom Jones.

Rudi, personally, I love Welsh erections and it sounds as tho the Glass House is truly another Welsh wonder to behold.
