In Las Vegas August 16: Another Night, An Exceptionally Great Show

mgm 8-16

Note from August 18 & 19: Tom is unbelievably energetic and the audiences these nights have been incredibly responsive. One thing that was great to see was the couples dancing. Usually at the MGM there are women who get up and dance but at these shows, lots of people (including Don Archell) were dancing for much of the show. It was terrific.

Now, back to August 16:

Tonight’s main event in the Hollywood Theater boasted nothing new — no new songs, no new patter and only one item — a rose — thrown onstage. But it was still one of those magical nights. Tom was electric, the band and back-up singers phenomenal and the audience hot.

Maybe it was the great seat in a booth level with the stage so the impact of the entire show was apparant and the audience response seen much more clearly than from the very front. But, whatever it was, no one was still. Patty from Long Island and Linda from Cincinnati danced (as did Ellen) for much of the show. People were singing along, screaming at the end of each song and Tom responded to it all.

In short, it was a wonderful, extraordinary show and the reasons fror that cannot really be defined. Our only hope is that every person who goes to see Tom gets to experience such a show from a — the — master showman. All in attendance tonight were lucky to be there.

Speaking of new songs, we hear a standard from one of Tom’s very first (if not the first) album is being added. But, after tonight, it doesn’t really matter because on nights like this Tom Jones, no matter what he sings or how often he’s sung it, can do no wrong.

The photo here from tonight’s show may not be the best quality, but you get the point anyway, don’t you?

Can anybody give us a rundown of any new songs he just added? By the way, Tom looks exceptionally fit and trim! Love that Man.

  3. SusannePDX Says:

    WOW…my heart rate just jumped!

  4. Dana Says:

Well, I have to agree with everyone re: Tom being fit and trim! I’m sure he’s very proud of himself. Good for him to stick with a plan or regimen. I’ve been having difficulty :( There are just some foods I will not give up — actually its the sodas. Anyways, hope the pic goes next to the similar one in the “Tom Then & Now” section. Arroooooo…pant, pant.

  5. Lori R. Says:

I’m glad someone finally got a good picture of him doing this. I just love it!

Ellen and Ursula: What can we do to get him on the cover of People magazine as the “Sexiest Man Alive” because he truly is!

  6. Cathy Says:

I love it when Tom lifts his shirt like this!! I laugh everytime I read some comment from a “reviewer” about Tom being heavier or out of shape. It must be the shirt he’s been wearing. Thanks for the review. I wish I had been there! I am definitely looking forward to Vegas in December!!

  7. Val C Says:

Lori, you are soooo right! He deserves to be on the cover of people. He is and has been the sexiest man alive for ever. All the others can come and go. Tom’s the one!

  8. Deb Says:

I agree with all and I think the picture is INCREDIBLE!!! December cannot get here soon enough as far as I’m concerned. YOWZA! Tom is the SEXIEST MAN EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. julia Says:

Well, that pcture did it for me. I am in for December. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I wish Tom was still doing the October Las Vegas show. I had alredy booked my room a year in advance and talked some friends into seeing Vegas. I will sure miss this. Tom is absolutely the SEXIEST 66 year old man I have ever seen………….

  10. Lynn Says:

Great Picture! I can hardly wait till August 20, when I will be in Vegas and get to see Tom on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. He is so awesome. He gets better every time I see him.

Hello TJ Fans - I saw Tom in Vegas August 12, 14, 16, & 17. Great shows (as usual). I was at a front table (8A) for 3 of the 4 shows. The “new” songs for these shows were With These Hands (from 1965 as Tom said) and Stoned In Love. S.I.L. is a cool song with a great beat… really like the echo in it. Just wish it was available here in the USA (any help/suggestions?). Tom was in good form, great voice, and very good spirits. On 08-12, he flirted with a “Georgia Peach” and on the 17th, had fun with 4 women from California. The biggest tease of the group, gave Tom a silicone eyeful and asked Tom if he could handle fpur women. Tom replied, “Four women? Yes — there was a time … but, it’s not tonight.” True & funny. I like the picture, but wonder how the photographer got it due to the strictness of the MGM staff regarding photos. I was also lucky enough to slide under the closing curtain an album of Tom’s to Tom on 2 different nights… both albums were signed and will go on my “Wall of Fame.” I just wish he would get some new jokes / material…. and a big hand to the band & singers for dealing with the same songs… same routines… night after night…. and not giving the impression to the fans that they tire of it. Don’t get me wrong — Tom Jones is STILL one of the best singers /performers past & present.

  12. beverly Says:

I was at the Saturday and Sunday shows at the MGM and was appalled by the actions of some of the fans. One woman dead center danced thru most of the show so the rest of us behind her and to her left could not see. Vulgarities and hateful comments were the order of the day. Tom was superb but, needless to say, I will not be returning to the MGM.

  13. Keith Says:

Okay, this from the elvisguitarman has made my day…this is a great line and laugh

“The biggest tease of the group, gave Tom a silicone eyeful and asked Tom if he could handle four women. Tom replied “Four women? Yes — there was a time … but, it’s not tonight.” ………..Damn funny!

Thanks for the great comment! Keith

  14. julia Says:

I am so proud that Tom is such a gentleman. He is an entertainer and gets the girls offering it all every night. I am so sure he is bored with it all. I just remember his comment, “At the end of the day, I go home to someone who loves and understands me.” That would be his wife Linda. I guess I am just a southern gal that was brought up to respect and expect to be respected. I love the performer Tom Jones and I appreciate the fact that he is a handsome man, but, he does not belong to us after the show. I would never do anything to disrupt the show or keep others from enjoying the show. I just wish others would show Tom and his devoted fans the respect he deserves. The girl with the extra needs to save them for someone who cares. Tom has much better at home…….Not Tonight and Not Ever……………..

  15. LINDA Says:

Cant wait for December 3, Atlantic City. Tom is the first voice I listen to on my way to work every morning and sets the tone for my whole day. Hope to see that sexy body at that show. One can dream! God! He is so hot!

  16. Lori R. Says:

I respect and appreciate what Julia said but after seeing as many shows as I have, if Tom didn’t want all that female “attention,” he wouldn’t do what he does on stage. You can tell he just “eats it up” at every show. After all, he’s a man isn’t he? And a gorgeous one at that!

  17. nancy j Says:

Caught the shows at the MGM on Aug. 19 & 20th. On Sat. night, Sir TOM outdid himself. The VOICE, incredible dancing, and dazzling personality electrified the audience, which responded with great energy. Between songs, I did manage to hand TJ a handkerchief. To my surprise and utter delight, he took it engaged me in a conversation! I was thrilled! What a magnetic MAN he is. I was so pleased to hear his wonderful presentation of With These Hands. Tom’s good friend Cook E. Jarr was at the show on the 20th. Can’t wait ’till Sir Tom is back on the west coast later this year.

  18. julia Says:

I guess Lori is right in her thinking. What man wouldn’t enjoy the attention. I guess my true thoughts are, he only belongs to us while he is on stage. He is an entertainer. After the show he has a family and is a husband, father and a grandfather. I am just happy to be able to see him a few times a year. I would never make a scene or annoy other fans.

  19. SusannePDX Says:

Sunday we shared a 3rd row table with 2 TJ virgins. Although they were from very close to TJ’s birthplace and had been to Vegas 3 times, Chad & Josie had never see Sir Tom live. They had the time of their lives and are now hooked TJ fans! I told them when they got back to England to check out TJI.com for the latest news.

I would rate Sunday’s show a 9 out of 10. The man was in great voice, very energetic, and randy! (3 thongs and a hanky were tossed) I’m taking off 1 point because there was NO audience interaction with one exception. At the start of the show, some man yelled out in a Celtic voice “remember the valley.” Tom didn’t hear and asked Herman to translate. Herman mumbled and Tom said “that s what I thought he said.” Other than that, nothing. Even the banter and jokes we diehards have come to memorized were cut to a minimum. I was disappointed when TJ didn’t lift his shirt during “200lbs of Heavenly Joy” but he came through and flashed his 6-pack abs during the encore. All in all, a truly wonderful night.

At Sundays show I heard no vulgarities or hateful comments. There was a blond and her mother who stood during most of the show. If she had blocked my view I would have yanked her feet out from under her or at least asked security to talk to her. I notice her and Mom hanging around afterwards hoping to get back stage. I chuckled when I saw them out in the casino only moments later.

  20. SusannePDX Says:

I forgot to mention the new lighting and arrangements. Many have commented on the replacement of Who Will the Next Fool Be with With These Hands. I love Next Fool but I thought the new arrangemnt of Hands was awesome!

Did anyone attend 8/23? I was wondering what kind of show you get on the last night?

  21. Beverly Says:

Susanne — Hear! Hear! Good for you !

  22. Lori R. Says:

Susanne, I had previously wondered what a show on the last night would be like too. I didn’t attend the show on 8/23 but did see his last show while he was here in May. The show was as good as ever but he did seem a little tired. He had just returned from his European tour and being Knighted, etc. so I think he had a right to be tired, otherwise a very good show, as always! :)

  23. Joe Says:

Ellen & Gang! I am sooooo glad y’all had a great time! So wish I could have been there! :)

  24. Fay Says:

Love is in the air… every sight and every sound…. Love is in the air…

    Sorry, I digress.

Tom is hotter than a Jalapeno pepper and cooler than a Mint Julep in July. LOVE THAT MAN!!!

  25. Chris Meier Says:

I agree with Julia and Lori, Tom Jones IS THE SEXIEST MAN & deserves to be Peoples’s Sexiest Man. NO ONE COMPARES TO HIM! 66 or 26 he has got it like no other!

  26. Chris M. Says:

To elvisguitarman: Tom’s new hit Stoned in Love is available to download in the U.S. as a Podcast for iPod. It has a short interview with him (very cool) then the song plays all the way through. You can also download it to your computer (if you don’t have an Ipod) if you have the Itunes program. Hope this helps you! Good Luck

  27. Moderator Says:

    From our April 24th post:

“An interview with Tom is available via podcast. In it, he describes how he heard about his Knighthood, discusses his music and collaborators — for a relatively short interview, there’s some real substance. There is no fee for the download.

If you have iTunes, open it and go to the “Advanced” menu (above the iTunes screen) and, then, to “Subscribe to Podcast.”

When the subscribe screen comes up, put in the url: http://www.umtv.co.uk/tomjones.xml and the podcast will download.

If you do not have iTunes, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download (or, in the UK to http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/download/) then download iTunes and, then, the podcast by following the directions above.

(Remember, you do not need to have an iPod to use iTunes.)”
