Illness Forces Cancellation of 2 Monte Carlo Shows

From the South Wales Echo (Be aware that in the story the quote is an old one from his website after the AC cancellations in July. And his official site has nothing. So take it for what it’s worth — which is probably nothing.)
Sir Tom - no show no cause for worry

Aug 29 2006/David James, South Wales Echo

“Legend Sir Tom Jones has reassured fans he is in the best of health despite cancelling concerts.

“The star was forced to scrap two dates in Atlantic City last month due to infected vocal chords.

“And he was forced to postpone two dates in Monaco because of a chest infection. But Sir Tom said: ‘Singing with chords that are not healthy can cause further serious damage. Otherwise, I’m in good health and all is well.’”

Note: Please, folks, it’s vocal “cords,” not “chords.”

Tom had to cancel two sold-out shows at the Monte Carlo Sporting Club. The reason for the cancellation was given as a “chest infection.”

Tom closed in Las Vegas on Wednesday and was to fly to Monte on Thursday for the shows.

As we did when he had to cancel two shows in AC last month, we wish our Tom all the best for a speedy and full recovery. If we hear any more, we’ll let you know.

I am a very huge Hungarian fan of Tom and I bought two tickets with my brother to his show in Monte Carlo. We would have travelled on the 26th of August and we would have seen him on the 27th of August. My brother got a phone call on the 25th that the concerts were cancelled because Tom became ill. Now I’m “glad” that I know what his problem is. I wish him speedy recovery and I want him to know that I was crying and crying when I got to know the news. We were looking forward with my brother to see him in that beautiful atmosphere on that special evening but unfortunately our dream could not come true…I’m still very, very disappointed…

  2. Deb Says:

First the throat infection, then the chest infection. I hope Sir Tom takes a deserved rest and manages to kick these infections out of his system. Sending Tom get well soon best wishes!!!

  3. Moderator Says:

Betti: So sorry at your disappointment. Hopefully, you’ll be able to see Tom soon. Maybe in the UK in October? Thanks, too, for joining our online fan community.

  4. Cathy Says:

Hi Betti. I’m sorry you and your brother weren’t able to have a special night with Tom! I’m with Deb on this one. Throat and chest infections can be sneaky and come back on you. Better he rest and become completely healthy. Betti, I hope that you will be able to see Tom in the UK in October.

  5. Betti Says:

  6. Martine (FRANCE) Says:

Hi everybody! Coming back from three weeks’ holidays, I jumped on my computer keyboard and unfortunately the news were not very good. I’m so sad to read that my king is ill. Let’s hope he will be wise enough to allow him a good rest . Betti, I can understand your disappointment but you are very lucky to go and see him in October! I’ll be miles away at that time but my heart will be in England. I haven’t seen him for three years and it kills me by inches!

  7. Fay Says:

I have something for that ; ))) It’s always sad to hear someone isn’t feeling well, but even more so when it’s one of our most favourite people!! Best wishes to TJ, hope he’s feeling better really soon ; )))

  8. Keith Says:

Not only should we be concerned about his “serious chest infection” which could be peumonia or brochaitis, but I’m concerned that the offical Tom Jones site has not offered any information which leads me to believe they are keeping this close to the vest and there is a more serious problem that they are not disclosing. I don’t like what I’m hearing or seeing…

  9. Ann Says:

I am worried, too. Maybe the official site is just waiting another day or so and they will tell us that TJ is on the mend. Good thoughts and prayers for our Tom.

  10. Lynn Swanson Says:

I actually saw Tom in Vegas on Wednesday night and thought he was in excellent shape. He looked and performed in his true professional manner. I’m hoping he gets better real soon. We all love him and want only the best for him. —Lynn

  11. Chris Meier Says:

My husband and I saw Tom On August 11th, for our 20th wedding anniversary and, as alwaysm he was tremendous. Although, I did notice that he didn’t seem to have the same energy that he had when we saw him this June in Tulsa, OK. He seems to be touring a lot this year, maybe it has taken a bit of a toll. We send our prayers for a quick and full recovery. Long Live Tom Jones… —Chris

  12. Lori R. Says:

I saw Tom twice in August in Vegas and he was wonderful - no signs of any health problems. I don’t think it was wise, by his management, to book shows half way around the world 2 days after a 14 consecutive day show run. Anyone would get ill doing that. I wonder if the drastic change of climate had anything to do with it. My heart goes out to all who had tickets for the cancelled shows. I hope you can all see him in October.

This just goes to show us that after all the discussion about his song list, outfits, audience interation, etc.; it all takes a back seat to our man and his health and we are so BLESSED to have this man with us and perform the way he does, for us, on a regular basis. He gives us his ALL at every performance and he is truly the greatest entertainer in the world. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Tom. Hope you are feeling better soon!

  13. beverly Says:

  14. Chris Meier Says:

I, too, agree that we are blessed to have him in person! Praying for his recovery!

  15. Brianne Says:

Yes! We are very lucky to have Tom. I pray that he will be well soon! Lots of Love Tom!

  16. julia Says:

I hope Tom Is doing better. I have cancelled my October Las Vegas trip until Jan. 07. I can’t wait to see Tom. I hope you take care, Tom. We all love you. —Julia

  17. Dana Says:

I think they book the engagements a year in advance, and since he’s done fine with this type of schedule, who’s to foresee an illness that far in advance? I don’t think the schedule is to blame. I think it energizes him to work so consistently. He seems the type that if he slowed down or stopped he’d wouldn’t know what to do with himself and get depressed and then probably get seriously sick.

I think its probably a bug that’s hanging on; probably picked up in the course of traveling. How many people does he meet and come into contact with throughout his travels? How often does he fly? You’re given medication, you feel fine, you don’t finish it - and WHAM! its back. Just my opinion.
