Some Tom To Tide You Over

Since it’s more than a month till the next scheduled TJ concert, we thought we’d have a bit o’ TJ Fun.
Here’s a photo taken of Tom at the end of the August 22nd show at the MGM in Las Vegas.
Now, depending upon your point of view, it’s either a great shot of a consumate performer about to bow, secure in the knowledge that he’s, once again, hit a home run. Or….
…..it’s a less-than-flattering shot that one person said “seems as if he was caught imploring someone for something….maybe a new shirt.”
This difference of opinion led to a discussion of possible captions for the picture. What would your caption be? Do tell.

A new shirt ? You really think he has only one of those black beaded shirts ? Having talked to his Stylist, Peter H., he obtained ten shirts in dark blue and black. Maybe a new shirt STYLE, but not a new shirt. Believe me, his wardrobe is huge enough.

Okay, a little off topic… but it’s a good shot of his necklace. Do the moderators (who seem VERY good at getting inside scoops) or perhaps someone else know much about the jewelry? It seems every year around the time of his birthday, he gets a new necklace which he wears throughout the year. Is it a present from his wife? Does she design it? Or does he get it for himself? Does he feel it’s a bit of an amulet - always wearing it, or does he ever take it off?

We don’t know for sure (and we preferred the platinum he wore last year), but we think he changed back to gold to match the ring made for him by a fan that was given to him in Ponty before his 65th birthday concert. The ring is amazing — a gold reproduction of the bridge at Pontypridd.
If you look at old photos, Tom has always had bling enough for all of us, starting with that ginormous gold cross and belt buckle back in the 1970s. It’s one of his trademarks.
But it seems he’s stopped wearing the gold ring with the Welsh dragon on it. At least for now.

Hey thanks for the response! Yeah I noticed the large gold cross that he wore for years, and yes I’ve noticed the BLING. (Good for him.) I was just curious. I liked the platinum one also. That is the one featured on the magazine cover, UPCLOSE, right? Very beautiful. Anyway, as I said, just curious as to who designed, etc., etc

I think he is saying, “I gave you my best, I love all of my fans.” He is giving all of us a great big hug and thank you for supporting him. Tom is amazing.

Tom used to wear a smaller cross when he first started out but he said it got torn off by some fans (as did the rabbit’s foot he used to wear on his belt). He said his wife bought him the bigger one as a replacement.
When Tom was on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross a few years ago he was showing his new cross with jewels set into it. I’m guessing it’s the same one he has now. He said he’d bought it to compete with Clef who was out-blinging him for a while when they were recording the Mr Jones album.

Hi in regards to the cross Tom is wearing now he has worn this cross in the past. I remeber seeing him wear it in the early 90’s. As for the Welsh Dragon ring, it was a gift from Gordon Mills and I much prefer the new ring he is wearing in its place. Maybe he is wearing yellow gold again because it is over $800.00 an ounce and again in fashion to wear

I like the platinum cross also but whichever one he decides to wear is fine with me.
I think in this picture he is feeling complete contentment after a hard night’s work and is soaking up the adoration of the appreciative audience.

Tom without a cross necklace, is like Samsom without his curly hair. Without it he is still Tommy Woodward from Ponty, but when he slips it over his head he turns into TOM JONES. The cross must give him super powers. OK I know I am being silly, but don’t we all think of him as our very own super hero?

First, my caption? “Ahhh, I AM good, aren’t I, ladies? Thanks for recognizing that.”
Second, I don’t care about Tom’s jewelry or bling…..it doesn’t make him who he is, but I’m with the moderator in that I prefer the platinum. I think he’s who he is because of his voice, his stage presence and his personality. The rest is is just dressing. In fact, for all I care, he can take off all that dressing. I also don’t think that photo has anything to do with his jewelry. It’s his expression that makes it interesting, IMHO.

I wasn’t saying that this photograph had anything to do with his jewelry. I said in #8 that I was going off topic. The moderators were having fun and asked for a caption to the photo and because it’s a “from the front and straight on” shot that showed his necklace I thought I’d ask a question. The way this site is designed we can only ask questions directly to Ursula and Ellen (our moderators) via e-mail or go off topic in one of the comment sections (as I have done here) to ask a question to all who view, unlike in a forum setting. I totally agree delilahdarlin that the jewelry doesn’t make the man; that as you say succiently “his voice, stage presence and personality” make him who he is. But the fact is, he does wear it, and I was simply curious about some of it and many here in the site viewing are long time fans who have more knowledge than I and I thought they might know, having heard an interview or read somewhere, about how it all came about.

We always welcome your comments and, as we’ve said all along, our only rule is that the comments and topics deal with Tom as a performer, not with his personal life.
That said, one of the drawbacks of a blog (as this is) is the post-and-comment cycle and we’re trying to do something to alter that. On the other hand, we’re very mindful of the way some of these online forums have deteriorated and we don’t want that to happen.
So, until we can figure out a solution, we’d be more than happy — eager, even — to get your suggestions for topics. Please email us using the links at the right to make suggestions. For instance, we need a question of the month for September. Ideas welcome in the next day or so.
Remember, too, we have a page called TJ Q & A that is designed for asking questions. Please use it. When people were posting there we had lots of fun. Just go to it by clicking on it at the right. It’s under the “Interact” category. In fact, there was discussion of Ton’s jewelry early on.
