Tom Duets With Sarah Brightman; What Do You Think?
Monday, January 15th, 2007On Fly Sarah Brightman’s 1995 album, Tom did a duet on a track called Something In the Air.
It was used on the soundtrack of of the TV show 24 and the scene is now posted on YouTube.
What do you think? Good pairing or not?
And, if you know, please tell us exactly what is “in the air.”

I love this song pairing and the music as well. It’s an interesting mixture because her voice is sweet and airy, while Sir Tom’s vocals come blasting through like a bull out of a chute. That’s our boy!!!!

I thought that Sarah Brightman sounded like Dido.
My husbands only comment was “boring!” I would have liked to have heard a lower and bigger female voice to match our Tom’s all-male and low voice.

I liked the song and loved the way Tom sings it. I agree with Cathy that a more powerful female voice would have sounded better. I could picture Tina Turner singing this song with Tom.

Yes - Sarah Brightman’s voice is insignificant in this song. It is Tom who really adds something to it.

We’re finding all of your comments interesting. This is especially so because the comments from Brightman fans on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk are decidedly different. One writes of Tom’s contribution, “…beside Sarah’s delicate, soaring voice, he sounds rough and abrasive.” We found her waaaay too Natalie Imbuglia-like; a poor partner for Tom because she used what one fan called her “little girl voice” here. Doesn’t match well. As they say, “c’est la vie, c’est la guerre.” And that’s what makes horse races, too.

I find the comments interesting as well. I still like the contrasting vocals, but then again, I wear a lot of black and white together….often. I have to wonder what Tom thought of the recording. There must have been “something” that attracted him to the project.

Before I would have never imagined liking a song with Tom and Sarah but I enjoyed it. (of course, our Tommy would sound great even singing with Tiny Tim) I could see Sir Tom recording the song with one of his back up singers. PS-Anyone seeing TJ this week? If so, don’t forget to share with the rest of us.

I’m just wondering whether the choice of vocal style had anything to do with the TV show, not ever having seen it. e.g clash of the sexes, strong man/weak woman or strong man/calculating woman etc? Can anyone enlighten me?

Sorry - just realised song was recorded years before it was chosen for the show!

What did I think of it? Not much. She’s too breathy and light, too much of a contrast with Tom’s big voice. They’re TOO different, IMHO, it’s distracting and not very complimentary to her. I like her voice, but not on this duet with him.
