Question of the Month: January 2007 — With Whom Should Tom Duet?
Monday, January 1st, 2007
The word is that Sir Tom will have a new album this year. If he does one duet on it, who do you think his partner should be?
We imagine he’d choose, say, Jerry Lee, Solomon Burke or some others of whom he is a fan. But we’re looking a bit beyond the expected choices in the hope of a hit in the US.
We vote for Bette Midler (top right) because she has the vocal chops and the sense of humor and would make a terrific partner for Tom — especially onstage.
Barbra Streisand (bottom right), also, certainly has the voice, but her presence is a bit stiff these days.
And we like Joss Stone (left) but the material would have to be carefully chosen.
Unlike some of Tom’s other recent collaborators, these three sell well in the U.S., too, so they would surely help Tom’s work get the play here that his last album with Jools Holland — terrific — and the original Reload — also terrific — did not get outside of the UK. This is, of course, assuming that a new CD gets released outside of the UK. If it does, a duet with any one of them would also introduce Tom to their audiences; perhaps new audiences for him.
It’s all good, right?
So — back to our question of the month — who do you like for a duet? And why?
