Tom In Chile: A Teaser Before Tomorrow Night’s Show
Wednesday, February 21st, 2007
Tom is playing the Viña Festival in Chile tomorrow night. It’s a six-night event that features lots of talent from that continent, along with Ricky Martin and Bryan Adams and an act from the Netherlands that we “met” and who were kind enough to send the promo poster art at left.
First, here’s video of Tom’s arrival in Chile (photo right; news report en Español)
Then, Scoop (who saw it all) gives us a brief report:
Sir Tom Jones was treated to an unexpected hero’s welcome Tuesday night as his flight arrived in Concepción, Chile. Nearly 200 people, most with cameras, waited patiently outside of the baggage claim area for Mr. Jones to appear.
Several local news organizations covered the arrival live.
As Mr. Jones made his way through baggage claim, he was immediately surrounded by seven local security agents who joined two police officers already with the star.
Mr. Jones, who did pause briefly for photos and an interview, was then whisked into a waiting car along with his immediate entourage.
A police van with emergency lights ablaze led the way. Several people ran behind the vehicles waving and attempting to snap more photos.
This continuing tour of South America is Tom’s first in over 20 years.
Scoop’s review of the show is forthcoming.
On the bill with Tom are Scott and Muriel, comedy illusionists from the Netherlands. Muriel emailed tji.com a couple of weeks ago to ask for our suggestion for a gift they could give Tom. We began to correspond and she sent us the poster you see here for the Vineyard Festival. She promised a report after the event and we look forward to it. Meanwhile, Scott and Muriel’s website is well worth checking out.

Wow, it’s obvious that the people of Chile love Tom!! It’s also great he had such a wonderful welcome and protection. I can’t wait to hear from Scoop.

Its so wonderful Sir Tom is getting the recognition he deserves. If we knew where and how, we’d greet him in the US like that too. I realize there are security issues but he justs seems so unaccessible in the states. As always, thanks TJI and Scoop for the info.

Thanks a lot for all the info and stuff regarding Tom’s tour at South America. It’s really like being on the tour with him. This South American tour seems to be quite much bigger event than I originally thought. And great to see that he’s so popular in there too!

I agree with the comments above. Who’d thunk it though that he was so popular down in South America? I just have this bias, I guess, that because most of South/Latin America is Spanish speaking and most of his songs are english and he doesn’t/hasn’t marketed to that crowd.. I’m just surprised. But hey great. Fantastic for him. I think he’s probably as just as surprised. SCOOP did say he seemed so at his reeption in her review. Way cool for him to be playing to crowds of thousands. BRAVO
Anyone notice the poster? Ricky Martin (who’d you’d think would be the most popular in a Spanish-speaking country) wasn’t (nor was Bryan Adams) posted center and larger? Sigh — it would be nice if his management would send updated photos ahead of time for inclusion in media products….
At least the L.A. Times Sunday edition Real Estate section a week ago or so got it right when they did a paragraph stating he sold his house (the one he had for his parents). Finally! An updated photo with the goatee.

Awesome presentation by Sir Tom Jones…… He is in almost all Chilean newspaper covers today. Waiting for the show this Saturday.
PS: “Vineyard” isn’t the right translation, “Viña” is the name of the city where the city.

Thanks, Daniel. Our translator got it wrong. We stand corrected and have corrected the post.
