Hope you enjoyed this Question of the Month. Maybe we’ll repeat it someday. Meanwhile, please check back for our April question.

Tom’s Back In Florida Starting Tonight; 17-Day Tour Kicks Off In Orlando

deauville

It’s been a long, long time but finally Tom starts 17 days of touring in Florida. Fans there, we hear, are delirious with joy (as they should be).

He opens tonight in one of our favorite venues, the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando. It’s the kind of room where the audience can just let go and dance, sing and have fun. Wish we were there.

Although he’s been to Florida since then, we have a program from an appearance at the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach. In 1964, the Beatles played their second US concert there and Tom was there several times, including the 1970 appearance at which this program was used.

We’s so happy for Florida fans and we know several who are going to more than one show. We’re sure you won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!

Trivial In the Largest Sense, But A Very Nice Compliment For Sir Tom

lesleyLeslie Garrett, an opera singer who does pop and jazz, too, is now playing the Mother Abbess (you know, Climb Every Mountain) in the London production of The Sound of Music. She was interviewed by 020.com, a London travel and entertainment site.

She was asked:“As one of the finest voices in Opera, what other singers (in particular outside of Opera) do you admire?”

She replied: “Tom Jones has a fantastic voice and has stood the test of time. I admire his longevity and the way he re-invents himself and connects with the younger audience. I admire all performers who are able to do that. I admire Madonna for that reason. Vocally, I think Heather Small has an incredible voice…”

NOTES: Remember, Tom did a duet of You Need Love Like I Do with Heather Small on Reload. And, apparently, like they just did when they were casting the umpteenth version of Grease on Broadway in the US, they seemed to cast the lead role of Maria in this new London Sound of Music via a TV contest, too — a totally cringe-inducing idea.

U.S. Tivo Alert: “An Audience With Tom Jones” On BBC America Saturday Night

audiencebbc
In 2000, to promote Reload, Tom did a concert in the UK that was recorded and released on DVD and VHS (only in PAL format) in the UK.

Thus, a majority of fans in the US didn’t have the opportunity to see it.

Now, (promo at right) BBC America is correcting the situation. This Saturday, March 31, at 10 p.m., they’re broadcasting An Audience With Tom Jones.

The show features Cerys Matthews (Baby It’s Cold Outside and What’s New Pussycat), Mick Hucknall from Simply Red and others with whom Tom worked on the Reload CD.

An interesting, amusing part of this DVD are the awkward, obviously scripted “questions” from the celebrity audience (many of whom non-Brits undoubtedly will not know).

But, all involved are great sports and it’s a treat. Be sure to let us know what you think.

NOTES: This is not the “greatest hits” Reloaded CD released in the US that had old stuff and a few things from Reload. This is the original with some terrific, interesting duets. So, after you see the show, you may want to pick up a copy of the original Reload. It’s a milestone in Tom Jones’ career and well worth owning (especially because you can get it at a good price.)

And, another note: He looks better on the show than he does on the DVD cover.

From the UK: Another Nasty Article.

Once again a British tabloid is trashing Tom Jones who is, surely, a living national treasure in the UK. If this is how they treat people they value, pity those they don’t care about. We’ve been asking why they do it and the answer is simple: he sells papers and that’s what they’re about. There is not one iota of anything new in this. And, for the record, unless they ran into a Brit on the street in LA, no one in LA would call anyone a “pensioner.” It’s all made-up garbage. But we’re posting this in the hope you will comment as you see fit (see below the article). The article is in today’s Daily Mail. The photos ran with the piece. The one on the left is uncredited; the one on the right is from a papparazzo with REX Features.

Tom Jones: Still a sex-bomb at 66?

tomyoungOn stage, he plays up to his hip-thrusting, sex bomb image of old.

Popping out to pick up some lunch however, Sir Tom Jones was happy to dress down.

The 66-year-old singer wore a casual zip-up top and elasticated slacks as he took a trip in his Bentley to collect some sushi in Los Angeles.

It was a far cry from the look with which he made his name in the Sixties, when his tight-fitting trousers and open shirts had women fans throwing their knickers at him on stage.

An onlooker who spotted him on his sushi trip in LA said: “I was really surprised by how aged he looked. He could have been mistaken for any other pensioner.”

The Crazy Canadian Girl’s Six-Night Show Affair With TJ

Las Vegas Nevada, March 9th —14th 2007 MGM HOLLYWOOD THEATRE

annaWow! I had finally arrived in Las Vegas, Nevada. Boy, I did not know what I was getting myself into. Once I settled into my room I thought, “Should I or shouldn’t I?” I had already five tickets to see TJ, but I couldn’t resist. I had to get another one. I quickly ran to the Hollywood Theatre for another one. I was all set six nights with TJ. This Vegas virgin didn’t know what she was getting herself into.

Each show was different in audience reaction though the set list was the same the shows did have some audience interaction. I thought Monday night show had more energy from the audience then the other nights that I saw. There were more people dancing even in the aisles which is nice to see. I believe that at a show people do dance and should dance. In fact TJ responds more when people get into it. I think it gets him going. But that is my opinion.

Because I saw six shows I think I should just do a review on the last show and boy what a show. This show I did manage to restrain myself and hold back from dancing. So I really took in the show.

The lights go out the intro starts. Tony gets the crowd going and introduces “The One. The Only. Sir Tom Jones.” Tom appears and gets the show started off with Raise Your Hands. He looked great and really happy to be there. Wow! What can I say? This man has class style and is just downright sexy at 66.
