The Crazy Canadian Girl’s Six-Night Show Affair With TJ

Las Vegas Nevada, March 9th —14th 2007 MGM HOLLYWOOD THEATRE

annaWow! I had finally arrived in Las Vegas, Nevada. Boy, I did not know what I was getting myself into. Once I settled into my room I thought, “Should I or shouldn’t I?” I had already five tickets to see TJ, but I couldn’t resist. I had to get another one. I quickly ran to the Hollywood Theatre for another one. I was all set six nights with TJ. This Vegas virgin didn’t know what she was getting herself into.

Each show was different in audience reaction though the set list was the same the shows did have some audience interaction. I thought Monday night show had more energy from the audience then the other nights that I saw. There were more people dancing even in the aisles which is nice to see. I believe that at a show people do dance and should dance. In fact TJ responds more when people get into it. I think it gets him going. But that is my opinion.

Because I saw six shows I think I should just do a review on the last show and boy what a show. This show I did manage to restrain myself and hold back from dancing. So I really took in the show.

The lights go out the intro starts. Tony gets the crowd going and introduces “The One. The Only. Sir Tom Jones.” Tom appears and gets the show started off with Raise Your Hands. He looked great and really happy to be there. Wow! What can I say? This man has class style and is just downright sexy at 66.
After Help Yourself Tom greets everyone, saying, “It’s great to be back at the MGM in Las Vegas….Nevada.” A lady yells, “Looking good Tom! It’s all about you baby! YOU’RE THE MAN!” Tom replies, “Glad you think so,” which leads us into The Reason which he explains is a new song for him. Watching Tom perform this song is breathtaking — the voice, the power, the range — there are no words to describe it, I love it.

Delilah is a crowd favorite anywhere. At one point Tom stood right over me. What a voice this man has. He does not need a mike. His voice is so powerful. I’m speechless and I had a big smile on for the rest of the night.

When 200 Pounds started I think my smile went all the way to my ears. This is my favorite…well one of my favorite TJ live songs. Tom’s hip and “this is it, this is it, look what you get” gets everyone going and Brian’s solo is outstanding. I notice Brian is always into it every single show he put out his best night after night. I think it’s time to change the “300 pound” joke though. It is getting old. He has done it for quite some time now.

Frank Strauss boggie woogied us into the Jerry Lee Lewis song End Of The Road. These songs suit TJ because they’re upbeat and fun. So far in the show it’s a great song selection.

The Van Morrison Cry For Home is good and sounds great. Honestly it’s not one of my favorites, but TJ”s voice and delivery makes up for it. But, again, that’s only my opinion.

The standards — Here’s That Rainy Day, Fly Me To The Moon and That Ol’ Black Magic — had me in a trance watching and still smiling. By the time he sang Black Magic my smile grew from ear to ear; I mean a 360º smile now. I think it would take TJ to come and put out my fire. OMG!!!!! The “You’re the lover I had waited for” hip wiggle had the girls screaming and his famous growl. Wow. He introduced his brass section — Kenny Anderson , Pete Olstad, Kevin Richardson and Mike Turnbull. Watching them is great too. They look like they are having fun up there.

Now we are getting into the sexy blues and naughty Tom in Git Me Some with Brain Monroney on guitar and Herman Matthews keeping that the good sound beat of the blues on the drums.Tom’s innuendo’s are just put out there and this song definitwely suits TJ. Toms vocals and the beat just gets your head moving to those blues. With Gradma’s Hands he just kills the naughtiness. And the intoduction of the best backup singers in the world — Darelle Holden, Sharon Hendix and BIG Tony Reynolds.

The show picks up again with the classic She’s A Lady and Stoned In Love (which I like but I would have loved to hear If I Only Knew instead). Again, that’s my opinion.

I’ll Never Fall In Love Again and Green Green Grass of Home are great TJ classics and always receive standing ovations from hardcore TJ fans which he deserves. He definitely sings these song with feeling . Outstanding show and vocal range.

Once again the pace picks up with What’s New Pussycat, and You Can Leave Your Hat On When hre sang “baby take off you shoes,” a size 14 high heel Aldo shoe went sliding across the stage and stopped right in front of Tom. TJ returned the shoe to the rightful owner after she showed him the other matching one.

You know it’s almost over when It’s Not Unusual is played. My TJ six-night run is about to end and what a wonderful run it’s been. And as hard as it was. I was still sitting. I grasped my chair knowing the encore is about to start. And those who met me know It was extremely difficult for me to do that but I managed just to do it to do this review.

Resurrection Shuffle belted. As you know, a lot of fans are sick of this song but I, on the other hand, love it. OK, it’s not like the original but it does have a great beat. OK, OK: here I go saying it’s my favorite, I Like the Way OMG! Michael Mennell bass riff this song that always got me going crazy. It’s a great great song! At one point TJ jumps, fist punching in the air. Oh! What a night! Then, to finish it off, Kiss. But after hearing I Like the Way, Kiss is a song for me to catch my breath.

After that, my six-night show affair with TOM JONES was over. Let me tell you I met such wonderful people. Not to mention any names you all know who you are. THANK YOU!!!! I’ve met new friends from around the world who I had a blast with. Ladies, we must do it again. “I LIKE THE WAY YOU MOVE”. Also I’ll have memories to last me a lifetime. I will definitely do this again. Next year, I hope, with the Lord’s blessing.

I’d also like to thank Tom for taking the time to sign an album for me and posing for a picture. Tom and Don: thanks for your time. It was greatly appreciated by an adoring fan who thinks you’re the greatest.

GOD BLESS YOU, TOM. VEGAS: SEE YOU NEXT YEAR..

Hi Anna, great review and great photo. Where was the picture taken? Any hints on where he hangs after the Vegas shows?

Mary to tell the truth, it was just luck.

  9. Mary Says:

Well, then, you really are lucky. I had the same kind of luck in Milwaukee last year — walked into the hotel lobby and he was standing by the bar. I just think it is even harder to catch him in Vegas. Good for you, it was a great picture.

  10. Lesley Says:

It was a sixe 40 (European sizing) Aldo shoe; not 14…I know because it was mine!! :) Great review!

  11. Anna Says:

Hey Lesley. Sorry I thought I heard size 14. OPPS, My Bad. Anyway, by the way, great toss. It was a perfect landing. Looking forward to May. Hope you get to drop by for a show. I’m lucky enough to catch one. Thanks for the reviews from Florida. You lucky girl.
