The Boyo Is A Good Sport
Monday, May 21st, 2007
If you’ve ever doubted that Tom Jones has a sense of humor (and there’s no reason to doubt it at all), then you’ve never seen him on Dame Edna’s TV show or at the 30th anniversary show of Amnesty International in December 1991.
On that show — organized by one of our favorites Eddie Izzard — he competed with Theophilus P. Wildebeeste in the Battle of the Sex Gods, singing the Barry White classic Can’t Get Enough of Your Love. Each sex god was wearing an extremely tasteful, large glowing red cod piece. In the end, the love-machine couldn’t quite top the Welsh singer.
There is video of the show available and it’s worth seeking out. (Theophilus P Wildebeeste is a character of British comedian Lenny Henry, who Americans may know at the title character in the Britcom Chef!)
For further proof that Sir Tom’s a good sport, check out this clip from the Party at the Palace in 2002 celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s 50th year on the throne. (Sorry for the quality of the screen shot from this video, but we wanted you to get the idea.)

Wow! I can’t get over the talent on that stage, what a great clip. Sir Tom, as usual, looking dashing with even a frog on his shoulder;))

Tom has a great sense of humour, but that Dame Edna how was awful. Loved Tom, but ame Edna seems more into embarrassing the guests on her shows. Kermit is cute.

Sorry, Pat, we respectfully disagree. We think Dame E. can be very funny. Tom’s entrance was priceless and we loved seeing Lauren Bacall. We kmow humor is totally subjective, but we thought it was a hoot.

If anyone could put a clip of Tom and Lenny Henry as Wildebeeste in The Battle of the Sex Gods on youtube, that would be so fantastic! I saw them the first time they did this, March 1991, in the charity show Comic Relief on BBC and I would just love to see it again (and cry with laughter as I did then).
