Fan Fare, What's New, Pussycat?
Here’s where you’ll find TJ photos and stories that don’t fit into any other categories. It is, as its name says, just for fans — and, hopefully, for fun.
“Tom Jones is sitting next to me!” — A Very Funny Clip From 2000
Tuesday, July 31st, 2007Here’s a newly posted clip from the same show — Tom singing You Can Leave Your Hat On. Be sure to watch until the end.
“Tom Jones is sitting next to me!”
So exclaims Dawn French on the Michael Parkinson (”Parky”) Show when she and her comedy partner Jennifer Saunders — whom you may remember as the riotous Edina on Absolutely Fabulous — were on the show with Tom in late 2000.
The funniest line? “I hope I’m pregnant by the end of this show.” And a bit later we see her rendition of Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally. Subtle? No. Funny? Very.
You can see it all on youtube.

I think my intial reaction to being so close to Tom Jones would be the same as Dawn’s. But then I’d gather my wits about me and trust me, Mr.Jones would get to see an altogether different reaction. Not one that could be shown on television! Wink.

I would like Tom sitting next to me. I would be so happy.

That is one of the funniest bits I have ever seen. It reminds me so much of how I felt the first time I met Tom Jones. He walked thru a door…….and he is a whole foot taller than me, (I am very petite), looking so majestic, perfectly dressed and coiffed, and spoke to me very politely in that deep Welsh voice, and all that fell out of my mouth was “Mr. Jones…some things are worth waiting a lifetime for.” I was desperately searching for my intelligence when all I could recall was the memory of passing a note to my best friend in the 5th grade on the sly, and me and my desk both falling over to the floor….you are embarrassed getting up…and you hope no one ever remembers…..but it was worth the tumble!!!

Thanks for this — I love Dawn French: she is smart, funny and a genuine fan of Tom’s. (I have heard her comment to this effect on more than one occasion.) She is married to Lenny Henry, alias Theophilus P. Wildebeeste, with whom Tom duetted wearing the strategically placed flashing red nose in the famous “Battle of the Sex Gods” on Comic Relief.
At the end of this show, when Tom is finishing his song, Dawn starts peeling off several pairs of voluminous undies and throws them at him — it’s hilarious. Not only is she a TJ fan, so is therefore a person of undeniably good taste, but she has also been quoted as saying: “I never do any television without chocolate.” Clearly a woman after my own heart…….

Do you suppose the host interviewed Tom at all? Maybe this same contributor has the entire show.

Marian: Tom was interviewed on his own by Parkinson on this show - I have the whole thing on tape. Somewhere.
