“American Trilogy” Video Posted; Bad Picture, Great Voice
Thursday, September 27th, 2007A video of Tom singing American Trilogy was posted yesterday on youtube. It’s from a 1975 concert he did with the Edmonton (Canada) Symphony Orchestra.
The songwriter he mentions, Mickey Newbury, also wrote Funny Familiar Forgotten Feelings, a song Tom did so beautifully. Newbury was key in redefining country music in the 1960s and 70s and is ranked by many alongside such writers as Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Tom T. Hall. Check out his stuff.

How glorious is this? Makes me go weak at the knees. I would love to hear Tom do another concert with a full orchestra because his voice, more than any other in popular music, really merits it. His band is wonderful of course - the best - and every member of it does a marvellous job but sometimes…..in addition…..how great it would be to hear him backed by that richness of sound that even the best synthesiser can never truly reproduce. Just my old-fashioned opinion….

Tom’s voice is HIS instrument. It’s as beautiful sounding as any instrument in the orchestra. And it’s totally natural. Siiiiiiigh.
