Tom Pays Tribute To Elvis in 1978: More Poor Video, Good Audio
Saturday, September 29th, 2007
In 1978, Tom appeared on The Midnight Special and, in a tribute to Elvis, sang Are You Lonesome Tonight? and Can’t Help Falling In Love.
Once again, the video is very poor, but the audio is very good, considering it’s most likely taken from 30 year-old VHS.

Wow! What a voice Sir Tom Jones has! I’m so glad to be a Tom Jones fan since 1969 when i first saw him on This Is Tom Jones. What a performer!

Hi David. I know how you feel! I remember as a young girl sitting and listening to him sing. I believed every word he sang and felt his pain or joy depending on the song. These last two videos make me think of that time and remember what made me love his voice in the first place! He still has the ability to take me away from what’s happening in my life and make me happy and relaxed. Ellen and Ursula, thanks for sharing the video and song with us!

This is proof that Elvis did not have singing ability that TOM has. TOM is 67 now and I think he is still better. i wonder what Elvis would sing like now. If only tom had been around in the 1950’s, I don,t think everyone would keep on so much about Elvis all time. It would be TOM. But we still have TOM. I don’t think that elvis was any better then CLIFF or ENGELBERT. not in singing ability anyway but he was here before TOM and i think this is why they call him the the “King.”

Listening to Tom singing these songs just gave me “chill bumps.” I loved Elvis and I love Tom. Thank God we still have his wonderful voice to enjoy.

We will never engage in debate about Elvis….He was wonderful. He was a tremendous performer who had a terrific voice. It’s not a contest. It’s not about “better.” Elvis was magic. Yes, Tom has an amazing voice, but we don’t understand why people have to compare them and we find it very interesting that so many Tom fans started as Elvis fans. As for Engelbert well, his voice is nice but we have no other comment on him and, while we do know a still-rabid Cliff Richard fan, he never even made a blip on the radar screen here in the US, so we certainly cannot judge or, worse, compare him. Why, there’s one TJ fan board where the very mention of Elvis could get you severe censure from the moderator. Or, worse, be kicked off. That’s crazy.
In short, this is where we stand in this meaningless Elvis vs. Tom “debate:” There is no comparison — and not because we prefer Tom but because there’s no need or valid reason to compare. And we’d bet that if you ask Tom he’d agree. He admired Elvis and still speaks of him admiringly. Fans of other singers are of course entitled to their opinions but we cannot think of anyone who can stand shoulder-to-shoulder to Elvis and Tom.
Each has firmly staked out his own turf. Elvis performing things like Green Green Grass and With These Hands after Tom made them hits and Tom performing lots of Elvis’ stuff serves to prove that each respected the other’s voice and choices. We should, too.

Hi. I agree with the moderators. I think that people tend to compare Tom and Elvis because they both had charisma. They had that something that it takes to make you a star. Both men had the ability to capture our attention and keep it. Unfortunately Elvis is no longer with us but Tom certainly is!! I have personally always loved Tom’s voice more then Elvis’ but I loved watching both men. I’m happy that someone has kept these videos alive, poor quality or not, and that they are sharing them with us! Thanks again Ellen and Ursula.

Why the few words on Engelbert?

I with Ellen and Ursula. I am both a fan of Tom and Elvis and their careers and voices cannot be compared. As for a personal opinion: I think Tom is a better technical singer with more singing talent, but Elvis was the one who changed the world.

The worldwide appeal of Elvis Presley is an unexplainable phenomenon. This may frustrate many who did not call themselves fans, but comparing him to anyone else will never alter his place in history. I would not be a Tom Jones fan if it were not for Elvis. I think the important thing to remember here is that we are all truly blessed to live in a time period in which we can say we’ve experienced the two greatest singers the world will ever know.

Elvis Presley and Tom Jones, defined the word “entertainer.” I’m a fan of both, think we all should appreciate them both, not compare. And, thanks to youtube, we can still enjoy these great entertaining moments. ‘Nuff said.
