The Definitive Tom On The Music He Loves The Most
Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007
We stand corrected by mharding and Paula. This from the 1987 Born To Be Me special Tom did in the UK — the one where these leather pants split. (But that’s another clip, obviously.) Here he talked about the music he loves most and then sings a tribute to it.
He’s a bit hoarse, but it’s still lots of fun.
(Several people sent us this link and we want to thank them all and to encourage you all to keep letting us know what’s on. Sometimes, we just get so busy that it’s difficult to keep track of all we’d like to.)

That’s from the Christmas tv special “Tom Jones, Born To Be Me” recorded for HTV Wales in 1987. The subtitles must be from a Japanese broadcast of the show. In the same programme Tom famously split the leather trousers he’s wearing when he did his squat during “Kiss” (recorded and released as a single the following year).

Love, love, love THE VOICE but is there a video of the pants split!?!

My Mom says his pants split when she saw him in Westbury too. Tom looking gorgeous in leather…I’m going to sleep a very happy woman now…

No, Marisa, it wasn’t his pants that split. His shirt tore. See the photos in our Tom Then & Now set. It was quite a night.

He’s as bad as Janet Jackson for wardrobe malfunctions. Not as bad as PJ Proby though. I suppose a lot of us will have read that Proby’s persistent on-stage trouser shredding resulted in him being thrown off a tour in the sixties and replaced by the up-and-coming Tom.

Well, having not heard of PJ Proby, I investigated. I’m sorry that this man was blacklisted for his clothes self shredding but I’m not sorry that Tom replaced him.
Thanks mharding, I’ve learned something new.

I also read that Tom didn’t like him much and used to refer to him as “PJ Probably”.

We are so happy that Tom loves that old time rock and roll..
Moderators, I hope this doesn’t get off track, but I have a funny story about PJ and wardrobe malfunctions…I showed a copy of my old Beat magazine from 1966 to Tom once…it has an article about PJ Proby where Proby was talking about Tom. Tom read the article out loud and it got to the part where PJ said, “I don’t think Tom Jones copies me voice-wise but I don’t think he needs to wear his hair in a ribbon and I don’t think he needs to wear fluffy clothes.” The writer of the article went on to claim that “Yeah, well at least Tom’s pants don’t split on stage. And for his ribbon — his wife makes him wear it.” I’ll leave it up to your imagination what Tom had to say about this….this was over 30+ years ago and I remember it vividly…something about the ribbon and where it REALLY should have been….
