Tom Jones, Bono, Macca: For Rolling Stone’s 40th, There’s Photoshop Fun On Freakingnews.com
Saturday, August 2nd, 2008Freakingnews.com, a site for Photoshop aficionados, is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Rolling Stone with a contest for site users to design commemorative photos.
The contest rules state: “Design any type of image that could show today’s music industry as it would have looked back in 1967. You know, psychedelic posters, bell bottoms, afro hair-do, anything related to 1967. Another option is to move 60’s bands & band members into today’s surroundings.”
We’ve chosen a few of them to show you (and the rest are great and well worth a look) and they should serve to amuse (Paul McCartney as the “new face of Kiss?” photo at right) until we get some fan reviews from Atlantic City.

Great! An up-to-date Tom, not that he isn’t anyway!

Could anyone imagine Sir Tom Jones dressed up like that???? Get Real!!!! Tom Jones is too elegant to be a hip hop dude, he’s always been a true gentleman. He looks so suave when he’s dressed up in pair of dark dress slacks, dress shirt, dinner jacket and a thin silk tie. OK, I’m a square. See how great Tom looks without that goatee. What a difference! A goatee just makes any male person look soooo much older than they really are. Look at Johnny Depp who shaved his goatee for the making of a new film. Tom Jones has such a sweet face with lovable expressions that get hidden behind those whiskers. Dear Sir Tom, please get out of the goatee phase, and shave it off. You have a beautfiul face, don’t hide it. As for Paul McCartney as a Kiss member, no makeup could hide the gentle face he’s always had. And as for Bono, well, seeing him in character as a Spock man, I would be interested to see him star in a sci-fi film. Nothing stupid, but something like a Star Wars saga, with romance/drama/adventure. For Tom Jones, love to see him to star in the leading role in a romance/drama film, like Love is a Many Spendid Thing. As for Sir Paul McCartney, for him, to star in a drama film similar to the hit movie, Steel Magnolia. Now that would be more interesting than to have them appear in characters not suited for them, at all. Thank you.

TJF: You are of course entitled to your opinion but, we must ask, if Sir Tom couldn’t picture himself like that, why would he have made that Mr. Jones CD with Wyclef Jean? Have you ever heard Holiday? He’s clearly adventurous and would probably enjoy this portrayal. And, many people like the goatee. After all these years, we’d be so bold as to suggest that it’s not a “phase.” As for Tom doing William Holden in Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing or Macca in Steel Magnolias, well, we’re all for artists stretching the boundaries, but, we could not imagine. Johnny Depp is an actor who can do anything and as long as he continues to do it, he can do whatever — and look however — he wants. And, we think, so can Bono.
This was posted as an exercise in fun, not to be taken seriously.

Well said Gill! Looks like Rolling Stone hasn’t run an article on TJ since Oct 2003 when they posted six pics from the 90s.
Let’s hope for lots of articles in October 2008!

Hello, Morderator. I know it was for fun, and that Tom Jone did not pose for that photo, and that is was a photo image of Tom’s face executed through Photoshop. For those who like his goatee, I know there are others who’d perfer him without it, aside myself. As for the “starring role” bit, I could see it happening, not necessarily based the on the movies I’ve noted, but yes, I could imagine them in special roles tailored for them. If you have a hight imaginative mind, then, anything is possible. All of them (Tom Jone, Paul McCarthney and Bono) are artists capable in stretching their limitations, artistically, whether it be in music or in films. For them. the possibilities are endless, when given the great materials, like a great script and a Master film director, like Franco Zefferelli, to work with. Look at Cher, Gene Simmons, and Bette Midler, all great performers and singers. Yet, they all starred in films with romance or drama, each of them doing a wonderful job, even earning the Oscar. So, yes, I could very well imagine Tom, Paul and Bono in feature films with starring roles. Hey, who’s to say that there could be another Oscar in the waiting for one of them. Nothing is impossible.

Golly - it always interests me how some of these threads deviate from the orignal thought. How did Tom starring in an Oscar winning performance come from this rendering of him dressed in a hip hop outfit! LOL.
I will say that the pic of Tom is really amusing and I feel that he himself would enjoy it if he saw it. From my observations over these many years, I would say that Sir Tom has a brilliant sense of humor about himself. (Anyone remember how he dressed-up in tights for the silliness on the Sonny & Cher Show many, many moons ago?)

I like the way Tom looks any old way - Hip Hop, Be Bop, goatee, no goatee formal dress, informal dress, soaking wet in the pool
You name it - I like it!

TJMoves, I completely agree with you. Threre’s no wrong this man can do. He has the voice, soul, and energy to sing any type of music. If anything he could do it better. His collaboration with Wyclef Jean is one of my favs. And Wyclef Jean covered What’s New Pussycat? on one of his CDs. (Cute version) Video is on youtube. And HELLO, soaking wet in the pool, best look
