Tom Jones & Diane Sawyer: “Good Morning America” Interview Part I
Monday, September 29th, 2008Sorry, we took an extra day posting this because we really wanted to pay tribute to Paul Newman. (post below)
Back to our look at Tom Jones hard at work promoting Reloaded October 27 through 30, 2003.
He was celebrated during “Tom Jones Week” on Good Morning America during which there were two interviews and a concert. On September 26 we posted the intro and first interview by Lara Spencer.
Now, toward the end of the week — building up to the concert — the big guns are called out and Diane Sawyer interviews Tom Jones, Part I.
Pictured here are (from left) Charles Gibson, Diane Sawyer and that guy they’re interviewing.
Tomorrow, Part II.
And Pat reminds us that the new DVD available on amazon.uk is from the Canadian series, not from the This Is Tom Jones series like the TimeLife ones are despite what the title claims.
Also, we want to wish those who celebrate it, L’Shana Tova — a happy Rosh Hashanah 5769. May the year ahead be healthy, prosperous, peaceful and filled with warmth, love, friendship and good music for everyone. Doesn’t time go by so quickly?

This is the way to start a day! Talk about an eye-opener. Seeing Diane Sawyer all atwitter and giggling over Tom was cute. It seems he has the same effect on all women. What I’d pay for a clip of Elvis or John Lennon coming up to Tom and singing his own songs back to him! I’m looking forward to seeing Part 2 tomorrow — and hoping that Tom will be making the rounds on the talk shows to promote “24 Hours.”

I must say, I have never seen Diane Sawyer lose her composure! She really couldn’t even be still or stop grinning in Tom’s presence! It was funny when she remembered a few minutes later that she sang in front of him & commented about it! I hope he does lots of interviews as well as lots of touring this coming year. Never been to his concert, so I really hope he hits Atlanta or somewhere close by!!

I don’t ever think I have seen Diane giddy either. But can we blame her? Hope they have him back on to promote the new CD. Still waiting on him to be on Oprah. It was great!

Why did they wait so long to have Tom on? Diane said that his music gets her going in the morning. Tom gets me going ALL of the time!

Darla! My thoughts exactly!

Darla, Gill: As anyone who watches morning news programs in the US and the UK (and anywhere else, we’d bet) must know, performers only tend to appear when they have something new to promote.
Diane Sawyer’s been at GMA only since 2000. Do the math. It wasn’t she — or the show — who waited “so long” to have Tom on. There was nothing in the US to promote. He did his promoting in the UK where he had product out. CDs in 1999 and again in 2002 while there was nothing in the US. Then he was in the UK only again in 2004 with the Jools Holland CD that wasn’t released in the US. You cannot promote a CD by telling people to go to eBay or amazon.uk to buy it because, even though you’re promoting it in the US, it’s not available here. Maybe he’ll be on again later this year to do some promotion of 24 Hours. Let us pray he does and let’s be honest about why we don’t see him on TV here. Tom Jones is an icon and most shows would certainly be thrilled to host him.

It was so funny to see Diane Sawyer acting like a schoolgirl with a crush on Tom. They are about contemporaries so it was easy to understand how she acted. So when is Tom going to be invited on Saturday Night Live? Roy Orbison was on; what can we do to get Tom on? You just know he would be great.

Dave: If it’s a hit he’s sure to be asked to go on SNL because to be asked an artist has to be hot — and a US hit will surely make tom hot — and the artist has to be cool. Tom’s been cool for years.

Yes, a Happy Rosh Hashanah and may it be an even better year than the last!!!
Thanks for the interview on GMA. Had not seen it for some time, and reminds me of how lovely our Tom speaks. No one could say the name of that train station more eloquently!!
Hasn’t Tom been on Leno when he isn’t promoting something?? I love it when Jay has him as a guest and I think it’s about time Tom is invited back!!
