TJI.com October Question Of The Month: Favorite TV Appearance
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008We’re in the midst of showing video of Tom promoting Reload for four days on Good Morning America in October 2003. This has made us think of Tom’s other TV appearances.
Over the years he’s been on many TV shows (including his own) and in some made-for-TV movies and episodic shows. So, our question of the month for October is:
What one, single TV appearance of Tom’s is your favorite?
Is there one you taped that you’d watch after several years? Is there only one on the This Is Tom Jones DVDs to which you return time after time? Is there one you remember but haven’t seen in years? Please let us know the ONE.

Tom was on 60 Minutes back around 2000 that I wish I had taped. Anyone have it?

I have 60 Minutes somewhere…!! My favorite TV-performance is Tom singing An Amarican Trilogy on Hapiness Island 1974. I watch that clip several times a year.

Tom singing I Wanna Get Back With You in 1994 on Jay Leno was great!!!

My favorite was the first time I saw Tom on tv; it was in ‘65 on the Ed Sullivan Show. He made such a huge impression on me and in my old and moldy memory, I can still see him singing, and can also recall what he was wearing as well. Now that I’ve been reminded, I’ll have to see if I can track down a copy of that performance!

Holly, I agree, I was so young, but I remember parts of seeing Tom on Ed Sullivan too. That was all it took. When he got his own show, I sat in front of the TV every week and couldn’t wait! I did not see the interview on 60 Minutes, but would like to. Someone should post it on this site or on YouTube.

Tom on any TV show is fine with me, and I did enjoy watching him on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air when he played Carlton’s guardian angel, but my favorite was the special filmed at Caesar’s Palace — Cinderella at the Palace. He was absolutely gorgeous sitting at the blackjack table and then dancing across the stage. WOW! I need to get the DVD out and watch it again.

I always loved seeing him on the Fresh Prince. But my all time favorite is his role on Mars Attacks! Especially the end of the movie. I was too young to remember his TV show but now that I have them on DVD they are awesome.

One of my favorite is a tv appearance of Tom in 2003 when he promoted Reloaded. He was absolutely gorgeous and showed a great sense of humour especially when they asked him if he liked French food and as he nodded, they offered him snails which he seemed to appreciate though it was only 9 o’clock in the morning!!

For me it was when he was knighted and shown on the local news. He sounded so down-to-earth and looked stunning.

I was 8 years old. The TJ show was on air. 35 years ago, and he still rocks my world.

I have two favorites — one was when he did a Knotts Berry Farm special and it was televised. When he sang Do Ya Think I’m Sexy (Rod Stewart song), he looked gorgeous. And then Tanya Tucker was a guest on that special and they sang Help Me Make it Through The Night. In his deep, sexy voice he sang to her “come and lay down by my side”. I can still hear the screaming the girls did when he sang that line. The second one was when he was on the Johnny Carson show. Johnny had just split with one of his wives and it cost him a pretty penny. When he asked Tom about his marriage, Tom admitted that they do fight on occasion, and once when he was performing at Westbury Music Fair in NY, she was there. They fought on the way in the limo and she started telling Tom she didn’t want anything from him, etc. Just picture Johnny’s face after he had just shelled out millions to his ex. When Tom’s wife was taking off her jewelry and was throwing the pieces out of the window. Imagine being on that road later on that night, getting a flat and seeing something sparkling……At one point she took off her engagement ring, but when Tom saw the size of the diamond, he quickly shoved it in his pocket. I also thought of the one where Tom was a guest on the Johnny Carson show and Joan Rivers was the guest host. That episode was hysterical — she was so in awe of Tom.

From reading the above answers to this months question, I realize that there are so many clips I have unfortunately never seen. I would have loved to have seen Tom with Carson. The TV performance that stands out the most to me comes from This Is Tom Jones Christmas when he sang Good King Wenceslas with the Treorchy Male Choir. While watching this clip, I am reminded of the type of music Tom was first introduced to as a child and enjoy hearing how well Tom’s voice complements and blends with the choir. This clip will become a holiday standard to me the same as watching It’s a Wonderful Life.

Wow there are so many. But I do love when Tom was a guest on the Lynda Carter Show and they sang With you I’m Born Again. I could watch this over and over ….so beautiful

I loved seeing him singing at the Vatican; he was so reserved and dignified. Like Audrey, I hate to think of all the interviews and appearances he has made that I missed during the 40 years of his career!!! Also liked him on the Men Strike Back TV special several years ago, Midnight Specials, Larry King.
Can hardly wait for that calendar, Moderators!!!! Knott’s Berry Farm….what else?? I can’t imagine how much work you girls put into it!!

I enjoyed seeing Tom as a guest on a 1974 or 1975 special called “A Salute to Sir Lew: The Master Showman.” It was a show honoring British impresario Lew Grade who was responsible for bankrolling many British TV series including “This is Tom Jones.” I recall Tom singing “I Have Dreamed” and nailing that high note near the end of the song. He then sang an uptempo song that I think was “Why Me Lord.” I also think the TITJ episodes with Sammy Davis, Jr. were masterpieces. They showed real chemistry when they sang together, especially during a duet on “I Gotta Woman,” from the September 1969 episode.
